FAQ's

What are gifts in wills?

Gifts in wills are specific items or donations left in a will. They are also often referred to as ‘legacy gifts’. Pledging a gift in your will is one of the most meaningful ways you can support the Christchurch Methodist Mission (CMM).

There are different types of gifts in wills:

1.       Residuary gifts – The remainder of your estate after consideration of your loved ones.

2.       Percentage or Fractional – A gift expressed as a percentage or fraction of your estate.

3.       Specific or Pecuniary – A specified sum of money/property/stocks/shares.

4.       Whole estate – This comprises your entire estate and is usually left by those without beneficiaries or those wanting to achieve a significant contribution.

Your lawyer will be able to advise you about which type of gift is best suited to you and your estate.

Why should I leave a gift to CMM?

Pledging a gift in your will for the Christchurch Methodist Mission will leave a legacy for the education, care, and health of future generations. The Mission is engaged across the age-spectrum, working with children and whānau at Aratupu Preschool & Nursery through to older people living in a supported environment at WesleyCare.

Our support services not only respond to urgent needs such as food and housing, but help people gain confidence, learn new skills, and participate positively in their own futures. Your gift will have a diverse and enduring impact.

How will CMM use my gift?

A gift in your Will, whether small or large, can empower our children, young people, and adults to live better and healthier lives. Your gift can help house the homeless, provide support to vulnerable families and care for older people in their later years.

Whatever the future needs are in our community, your generosity will equip and empower the Christchurch Methodist Mission to make a difference in people’s lives for generations to come.

Can I specify where I would like my gift to go/ how I would like it to be used?

The Christchurch Methodist Mission responds to urgent community needs that will often change over time. Therefore, we ask that you trust our experienced leadership team to bestow your gift where it is most needed.

However, if you do wish to dedicate a gift to a specific area of our work, please get in touch with us. We can discuss the best way to word your request to ensure your wishes are honoured.

I don't think I'll have anything worthwhile to give- what's the point in making a will?

Any gift, whether modest or large, can make a difference to someone's life. Even 1% of an estate can make a very valuable impact. Your gift does not have to be large, in fact we would recommend leaving CMM a gift after your family and friends are taken care of.

Many of us lose the opportunity to leave a legacy gift as we assume it will be too difficult or time-consuming to do so. It is in fact, a straightforward process that will give you a great sense of personal satisfaction.
