The Blanket Bank

The Blanket Bank is a project of giving and receiving, free from judgement, mahi a ngākau (work of the heart) which gives out free blankets and bedding to individuals and whānau. Hundreds of items are given out every year to help keep whānau and tamariki in our city warm.

Many homes in Ōtautahi are still insufficiently insulated and the costs of heating and bedding are hard for many whānau to manage. We are committed to supporting anyone who can benefit from receiving a package from the Blanket Bank - the only criteria for accessing the service is a need for warm bedding.

We rely on donations from the general public to maintain our stock levels of bedding and blankets. If you can support us by making a donation, we'd be extremely grateful. 

How we can help you

We can help you with blankets and bedding for you and your whānau. Get in touch with us to let us know what you need and your bedding sizes. We will then pack up your bedding and make a collection appointment for you to pick it up. We're often very busy with requests. For this reason if an appointment is missed with no communication, your bedding may be redistributed.

Please be aware we rely on public donations so we may not always have all, or exactly what you need. We will always do our best to support you.

How you can help us

Donate blankets or bedding

We rely on the generosity of donors to maintain stock levels. Donations of clean, good condition bedding items are gratefully accepted, second-hand or new. We cannot accept electric blankets or hot water bottles.

Arrangements can be made for large donations. There is also a collection bin at the Challenge Service Station in South Brighton. Out of respect for our community, please refrain from leaving donations unattended. We value and appreciate your donations.

Make a monetary donation

As well as supporting the Blanket Bank by donating bedding and blankets, you can make a monetary donation. Funds will be used to purchase items as needed and cover operating costs. To make a donation, click the link below and select 'Blanket Bank' from the drop-down menu.

Host a Blanket Drive

Hold a Blanket Drive event at your workplace/school/community group/sports club where people can bring in blankets on a certain day or over a week. A great way to give back- many of us have spare blankets lying around home!

Birthday Blanket Fundraiser

Have a birthday or special occasion coming up? Instead of presents, ask your loved ones to gift a blanket in your honour.

Volunteer with us

We're always looking for volunteers to help us sort and pack blankets. If you can support us by volunteering we'd love to hear from you.
