Whare Tiaki turns five

Whare Tiaki reached an exciting milestone recently as it's been five years since its opening in 2017. Residents and staff celebrated the occasion with a special lunch. Whare Tiaki is our supportive living whare (house) for kaumātua (older people) with eight independent suites located on the grounds of Wesley Village.

“Whare Tiaki is a home where manaakitanga (hospitality and care) and aroha (love) are abound. Kaumātua look out for each other and are supported by the wonderful kaiāwhina. Special mention needs to be made of Willow, who has been the principal kaiāwhina from the start, making everyone feel welcome” says CMM Executive Director Jill Hawkey.

Whare Tiaki is based on a Māori health model of Te Whare Tapa Whā or the four cornerstones of Māori health - taha tinana (physical health), taha wairua (spiritual health), taha whānau (family health) and taha hinengaro (mental health).
