Stage 1 of WesleyCare's two stage redevelopment is officially open...
The occasion was marked by the blessing and opening of the new chapel and 60 hospital rooms on the afternoon of 21st June followed by a walkthrough of the new facilities. Presiding over the blessing was Rev Dr Mary Caygill, Minister of Durham Street Methodist Parish with Dr Arapera (Bella) Ngaha, vice-President of the Methodist Church of New Zealand/ Te Haahi Weteriana o Aotearoa delivering the address. Following the service Ruawhitu Pokaia of Ngai Tahu blessed the hospital rooms. The new chapel will play host to regular services for residents as well as being used by the wider community. With stage 1 officially in service WesleyCare has two new wings – one housing the chapel, kitchen and laundry facilities and the second providing modern and spacious bedrooms for up to 57 residents. The existing WesleyCare building (previously known as Fairhaven or Wesley) is in the process of being demolished to make way for the 2nd stage of the redevelopment. After demolition is complete, Stage 2 to build the remaining two wings will commence with completion expected in early 2017.
