Kia ora I’m Deb Cullen, the Christchurch Methodist Mission’s Emergency Housing and Social Support Worker in Nelson. I’m really excited to share a new initiative that’s all about supporting our community, together.
In partnership with the Nelson Tasman Methodist Parish and Christchurch Methodist Mission (CMM), we launched a free, confidential, and holistic support service in in July this year. Its open to anyone who needs a helping hand in the Nelson/Tasman community.
This pilot project is currently open on Monday’s and Friday’s between 1:00pm – 4:00pm. The office is based at the Stoke Methodist Church. This support service is here to walk alongside the people within the community whether they need someone to talk to, help navigating social services, support with self-referrals, well-being advice, or even practical help like creating a weekly menu or budgeting groceries.
At the heart of this mahi is a deep belief in people — that with the right support, we can all find our way to safer, more empowered lives. Sometimes all it takes is someone to listen or offer a bit of guidance — other times, the journey is longer, and that’s okay too.
As a mum of five, I understand the ups and downs of daily life and how much strength it takes to reach out. My hope is that this space becomes a trusted hub of support, connection, and growth for our community.
We’re stronger when we work together — sharing knowledge, building confidence, and uplifting one another.
