McAra Courts in Sumner has reopened after a major makeover made possible through a partnership between the Port Hills Uniting Parish and the Christchurch Methodist Mission (CMM). The four refurbished units now offer warm, modern, affordable homes for older renters — a growing need as housing distress continues to rise.
At the reopening on 31 March, CMM Executive Director Jill Hawkey acknowledged mana whenua and past parishioners whose vision ensured the land continued to serve the community. Incoming tenant Cheri Cundall, who lived in McAra Courts before renovations began, was thrilled to return to her upgraded home after seven months with family.
The project included asbestos removal, new roofing, double glazing, recladding, insulation, heat pumps, modern interiors, and redesigned outdoor spaces with raised gardens and improved accessibility.
CMM says older people are increasingly struggling to secure affordable rentals, with the median one‑bedroom rent in Sumner at $600 per week. Thanks to this collaboration, four residents now have safe, secure and affordable homes.
