For many neurodiverse tamariki, participating in group programmes can be an ordeal. Too often, challenging behaviours or differing support needs can lead to exclusion from activities that help build confidence, social skills, and resilience. Bounce was created to change that.
Designed specifically to flex and adapt to the needs of neurodiverse tamariki, Bounce provides a safe, supportive environment where children can learn, connect, and succeed alongside their peers. Through activities that build emotional and social literacy, participants gain practical strategies for navigating everyday challenges while developing a stronger sense of self.
“Our goal is to create a group where tamariki can participate, belong, and experience success, regardless of the challenges they may face,” says Kylie Morel, CMM’s Children & Adults Group Coordinator & Facilitator. “Bounce is about recognising strengths and creating opportunities for every child to shine.”
Since introducing Bounce in schools across Ōtautahi, the impact has been significant. Tamariki consistently report a greater understanding of their emotions, new coping strategies to add to their “toolbox”, and increased confidence. While many begin the programme feeling uncertain or anxious about what to expect, by the final session most are reluctant to say goodbye.
“What stands out is the transformation we see over eight weeks,” says Kylie. “Children who arrive unsure of themselves often leave with greater confidence, stronger connections, and the belief that they can overcome challenges.”
Schools are seeing these changes too. Hoon Hay School praised the programme’s adaptability, noting that neurodivergent learners felt accepted and included while learning important skills through active, practical sessions.
Demand for Bounce continues to grow, with increasing requests from schools, community organisations, and families. This reflects a significant need within our community and highlights the value of accessible, strengths-based support for neurodiverse tamariki.
“Every Bounce group helps to ensure that neurodiverse tamariki are not defined by their challenges, but empowered by their strengths,” says Kylie.
Thanks to our supporters, Bounce helps more neurodiverse tamariki build confidence, resilience, and belonging. To help keep the programme accessible, visit mmsi.org.nz/donate and select “Group Programmes” from the Donation Purpose drop-down menu.
